PRESIDENT & CONTENT PROJECT LEAD

Carolyn Wilby BA, MBA
"Hello my name is Carolyn and I am a "decode-aholic ..."
With over 15 years experience writing and consulting in the areas of business/educational marketing communications and clear language, Carolyn openly admits to being an incurable "decode-aholic" - unable to open mail (even junk mail) without blacking out while unconsciously streamlining the information - unable to walk down the street without "hearing voices" as English advertising errors scream out at her - and overall, feeling possessed by one clear vision: convert organizations everywhere to clear/plain language principles: "Get to the point", "Less is more", and "Just say what you mean ... and then write it like you would say it."

As founder of Clear Language @ Work, Carolyn has helped organizations tackle complex topics in the disability management, healthcare and financial services industries as well as, most recently, the IT sector. Since 1998, Clear Language @ Work has also provided extensive original writing, adaptation and general English support to clients focused on reaching the English-speaking Asian markets in Toronto and Hong Kong.

Before establishing Clear Language @ Work, Carolyn held both supplier and client-side marketing management positions in the private and public sectors where she honed her clear/plain language writing skills working on complex insurance/rehabilitation claimant information and marketing literature (Aetna Health and Life Insurance Companies of Canada) and "decoding" healthcare issues and medical information for professional and patient target groups, as well as the general public (Scarborough Public Health Department).

Carolyn holds a Bachelor of Arts (Commercial Studies/Economics) from The University of Western Ontario and Master of Business Administration (Marketing) from the University of Windsor Ontario. Carolyn's MBA thesis: Concept Testing With and Without Product Trial was published in the Journal of Product Innovation Management, Vol. 14, 1997 and continues to be referenced in publications such as Marketing of High-Technology Products and Innovations, 2005, Prentice Hall. After graduating Carolyn specifically focused on further developing her writing skills through course work in the Magazine Publishing Program at Ryerson University, as well as correspondence courses through the Plain English Campaign in the United Kingdom. Carolyn's investigative nature has led to the exploration of remote destinations in distant lands throughout (so far) Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Galapagos Islands, Central America, Africa and Iran.
